The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
