A bettor profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was made public, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from confidential information of the event.

Market Movement in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the month's conclusion increased in the period preceding former President Trump declared on the weekend that the president had been taken into custody.

One account, which became a member recently and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $436,000 from a starting bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just under 7% in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

Yet the market's assessment had increased to over 10% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the first hours of the next day, suggesting a rapid movement in market sentiment just before the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," commented Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other individuals also profited large payouts from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Politicians are starting to take note.

Proposed legislation put forward on Monday would prevent federal workers from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the past few years, with participants able to wager on everything from sports to current affairs.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market space.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
